043 Dwayne Paro welcomes Greg Jumes to today’s podcast. Greg is a Marine Corps veteran of the war in Iraq who after leaving military service in 2010, turned to a career of high threat security contracting in Iraq and Afghanistan. Greg transitioned to civilian life for the second time in 2015. Having a difficult time adjusting to civilian life, Greg found his new purpose, helping veterans adjust by developing a tool for them to find the help and resources in their cities, Victor Tech.
Serving our Great Nation (2:28)
Greg joined the military when he was 17 and went into the Marine Corps. He deployed into Iraq in 2007-2008 as part of a surge. When he came back state side he was sent to the Staff Judge Advocates office to finish out his enlistment in 2010. He returned back to Wisconsin where he grew up.
Transitioning to Entrepreneurship (5:00)
He anticipated an easy transition due to his service to our country but it turned out to be anything but that. Greg became distraught to some extent because he was leaving what he knew and provided him structure. This lead to drinking and the use of cocaine. His family wasn’t sure how to interact with him due to his circumstances. He found himself lost and not sure how to get started again even though he had a wife and son that would be moving to Wisconsin to join him. Just those little life skills he found were lacking because of all the military provides. He transitioned out to a used car salesman job which was demeaning to the integrity and honor he had.
Networking in the veteran community is what really turned around his focus. This allowed him to develop skills to talk about things that are not military focused.
“You know there are opportunities out there but how do you find them.”
Greg decided to go back to the contracting world and support the same group he had supported out of country doing security. He then transferred to an e-commerce company and was selected for security position. His job brought in Bunker Labs and exposed him to the idea of starting a company. This led him to start Victor Tech.
