Serving our Great Nation (3:18)
Troy joined the military by attending west point and graduating in 1990. He was commissioned and deployed to Germany, then over to support Desert Storm. He then returned to Germany and was eventually transferred to Fort Knox stateside. After that he was assigned to Hawaii where his duties changed to light cav foot dismount type of experience vice the heavier mechanized form that he had previously been part of with tank, etc. From this assignment he returned back to main land where he was approached about becoming an employee of IBM in the information technology realm. The idea of going to work for IBM was enticing. He decided to transfer out become an employee of IBM for several years.
Transitioning to Entrepreneurship (17:45)
Troy was presented an opportunity to work for the family business to help take it to the next stage from what his father had founded and developed over the years. As his father was retiring they wanted to bring in a known and trusted quantity. One of the great attractions of the transition was the ability to have flexibility which leads to being able to spend more time with his family.
“The goal for me was that I owned a business and not a job.”
As part of his entrance into the family fire and safety business he acquired Bare Metal Standard and brought it in to the overall existing business. This was an intense transition and time but was well worth all the effort put into making it happen. This is a franchise portion of the business offering additional opportunities that were not part of the original business structure. As the staff became trained and more capable in day to day operations Troy was able to be more focused on business growth versus hands on support.
