027 - Dwayne Paro welcomes Rick Yost to today’s podcast. He is a serial entrepreneur and the co-founder of VeteransList.US, a service disabled veteran owned small business that provides the most comprehensive Veteran Owned business directory available. They help Veteran Owned Businesses be found. A service disabled veteran himself, Rick brings his military experience as an Army officer (12+ years), extensive education (PMP, MA, MBA, and JD), startup experience, and his business experience to bear in consulting, entrepreneurship, and providing support to multiple businesses. Additionally, Rick volunteers as secretary and board member for the U.S. Army Ranger Association.
Before becoming an Army officer and trekking out into the world, Rick grew up in a small town in South Dakota and loves to golf, hunt, and ski. Rick resides in Los Altos, CA with his loving wife where they are devoted parents to four children and one Labrador retriever ranging in age from 2 to 23 years.
Serving our Great Nation (2:40)
Rick joined the military through ROTC at the University of South Dakota. He spent his time in the Calvary over his twelve years. Served in Operation Desert Storm in the early part of his career. He separated in March 2001 via medical review board.
Transitioning to Entrepreneurship (4:30)
Rick transitioned out to a standard job but had exposure earlier in his life to entrepreneurship. He spent all his time remote from his supervisor and main organization so it gave him a different perspective in running the contract he was on.
He had an opportunity with an Army buddy and moved to a small company that allowed him to do more program management efforts preparing him for growing a potential business of his own. This exposed him to managing different types of teams and contracts giving him key skills and experience.
Marketing and business development became a key part of his experience that he uses as an entrepreneur.
Met a guy through networking about technology and experience he had and one thing led to another to start a business together. They started a cyber company around the great recession which led to challenges in keeping the business growing, eventually led to breaking even as they exited the space.
“Raised funds from angels through the process.”
Same business partnership started a new company to do reputation management. This company still exists and has been going for several years. It has a slow and stable growth but not necessarily scalable to grow significantly.
“Very small cash calf”
He’s been in and out of entrepreneurship, back to government jobs, and startups. All of this has led to start Veterans List. Found an opportunity on kickstarter, something someone else was looking to start. It made a lot of sense based on his prior experience and felt this had great potential. They have been helping veteran owned businesses, they have about 130k on their site. They have various services that help veteran businesses in many ways.
