He was on active duty for 20 years in chemical warfare. He spent time in many different types of units due the nature of his discipline. He was able to see how different people operate and culture are different between the various disciplines.
Transitioning to Entrepreneurship (8:36)
The entrepreneurial opportunities came to him as he was transitioning out of the military. He had started writing books for five years prior to getting out and it introduced him to many influential people. While marketing his book he ran into the founder of Ranger Up at a military tournament. Ranger Up carried his book and then offered for Kelly to be a partner in the company.
“I didn’t go out there and say I wanted to be an entrepreneur, it found me.”
He has sense started Grey Beard Publishing, is a partner in a new venture called the Veteran Market and is about to launch a new venture making survival bags.
One of his favorite quotes is “You don’t just bet on the horse, you bet on the jockey”. So you bet on the guy running the venture, not necessarily that the service or product is destined to be the best. These ventures tend to open doors and allow you to be part of other ventures.
“Sometimes you have to be in the right place at the right time to get your big break.”
You have to zig and zag in your business to make sure it works for the market and can be enduring long term. As well you need to make sure all your clients are not the same industry because if there is a down turn you will find it hard to survive.
